Our History

The church that became what we know today as Holy Trinity Lutheran Church was begun in 1831 when the Rev. Daniel Gottwald formed a congregation in Petersburg (later known as York Springs). In 1832, a parish was formed which included Petersburg, Upper Bermudian, Benders, Pines, Lewisburg, Fileys and Barrons.

A church building was constructed on the present site in 1836, and a parsonage was purchased in 1860. Sometime late in the 1800's the church building was reconstructed. In 1855, the church was incorporated; the name of the congregation was "The Huntingdon Evangelical Lutheran Church in Petersburg". In 1922, the parish consisted of York Springs, Latimore, and Two Churches. By 1937, the parish was well established and consisted of Lower Bermudian, York Springs, and Chestnut Grove.

In 1960, York Springs Lutheran Church withdrew from the parish to become a single Pastoral Charge, and called a pastor of its own. In 1962, the name changed from "The Huntingdon Church" to the "Holy Trinity Lutheran Church".

In 1964, an adjacent property was purchased, which became our present day parking lot. The Sunday School wing was built in 1968. The carillon was installed in 1974. The Taylor & Boody organ was purchased and installed in 1986. The parsonage was sold in 1990.

The building that is now know as The Parish House was purchased in 2001. The building was renovated and is now being used for the church office, clothing pantry and also has rooms for the youth of our congregation.

In 2002, the church began a Capital Campaign. The money from the Capital Campaign is being used to do major renovations to the Sanctuary, Fellowship Hall and the Sunday School wing. Some of the projects that have already been completed are: Air Conditioning, roof, carpeting and paint in the Sanctuary and pew cushions.

The church has come a long way since its beginning in 1831, and in 2006 we celebrated our 175th Anniversary. It has evolved from one of seven or eight churches to a single charge, from "Huntingdon Church" to "Holy Trinity Lutheran Church".
